Throughout 2023 and into early 2024, I struggled with mild hair shedding. In my case, the main triggers were stress and scalp sensitivity. One issue fueled the other, and together, they ultimately led to hair loss. It wasn’t severe, but the ends still needed an occasional trim. Nevertheless, I was thrilled to see baby hairs growing, healthy ends, and minimal hair loss by summer 2024:

First attempts to overcome shedding

The key to my success was recognizing that stress and sensitivity are interconnected and both contribute to hair loss.

Firstly, I decided to consult a dermatologist, complete blood tests, and consider other potential health issues that might trigger hair loss. The dermatologist diagnosed me with telogen effluvium. In my case, this meant I was experiencing gradual hair shedding as a result of stress/ unknown factors (other potential diagnosis were ruled out through blood work and a review of my medical history).

My second thought was to tackle the stress factors—and so I did: meditation, healthier eating habits, outdoor activities, and other stress-relief strategies. However, my hair still didn’t stop its gradual shedding…

Sensitive scalp: definition

That’s when I began documenting all my hair-washing routines. Before long, I noticed a pattern: whenever my scalp wasn’t itchy or burning, my hair shedding would return to normal. This realization led me to experiment with products designed for sensitive scalps. I eliminated shampoos that triggered a burning sensation and started using more moisturizing masks specifically designed for the scalp.

I delved into scientific articles and studies to validate my thoughts and support the connection between sensitivity and hair shedding. But first, lets determine what it means:

Now, let’s dive into the theory! I want to start with the: “Sensitive scalp: An epidemiologic study in patients with hair loss“, 2022:

The study's primary goal was "to determine the prevalence of sensitive scalp in patients with trichological disorders." However, the most groundbreaking discovery was the strong connection between sensitive scalp and sensitive skin on the body:

The study was conducted “on patients of the Dermatology Clinic of Genova from January 2018 to September 2019 for scarring and non-scarring alopecias”. Don't be intimidated by the term "alopecia"—it's simply the scientific name for a condition where hair falls out more than usual. So, the patient pool was wide - telogen effluvium (TE); androgenetic alopecia (AGA); alopecia areata (AA); scarring alopecia (SA); trichotillomania (TR - a chronic condition where a person compulsively pulls out their hair.). Furthermore, scalp symptoms such as pruritus, pain, burning, and itching sensations, both localized and across the entire perimeter of the scalp, were documented.

A total of 317 individuals of various ages and genders participated in the study, each diagnosed with one or more of the conditions mentioned above. Patients with telogen effluvium (TE) reported the highest number of complaints about scalp sensitivity (at this point I felt like shouting, “That’s me!”) — ranging from mild pain to a burning sensation. Other patients did not have such severe reactions.

102 out of 317 had sensitive skin (mainly women). Although, why women prevail “is unclear, but they may have an increase in pain perception related to higher anxiety scores than men“. So this is where the stress factor comes into play.

Furthermore, as we age, the scalp tends to become more sensitive. This might be “related to the loss of nerve endings in the epidermis due to age and to the chronic use of irritants in shampoos. Cosmetic and care products may unbalance scalp microbiome inducing immunological or inflammatory responses.“ (This is when I decided I wouldn’t be using shampoos or masks on my scalp that cause itching or a burning sensation anymore. Who wants to damage their nerve endings, right?)

Inflammation, dermatitis and scalp sensitivity

I began reflecting on hair sensitivity and found that inflammation in the hair follicles is a common factor in most cases of hair loss. The Spanish company Pharma Hermetic, known for developing various hair loss treatments, discovered during their studies that: “Interleukin 6 (IL6) is an inflammatory cytokine, which is present in most hair loss cases. When the hair starts to fall out the level of IL6 rises in concentration and inactivity. The inhibition of IL6 near the hair follicle area has been the main focus of medicinal treatment for many years”.

The following studies support this idea. An interesting article from 2012: “Sensitive Scalp” revealed that patients with atopic dermatitis experience sensitivity more frequently. Stress and climate changes were also identified as contributing factors:

A 2002 study titled: "Sensitive Skin Is Not Limited to the Face" explores skin sensitivity as a whole, highlighting that it affects more than just the face. The authors reviewed patients from a dermatology clinic to better understand the prevalence and characteristics of sensitive skin:

The majority of participants—85% of 400 patients—reported that their skin was prone to sensitivity, with the hands, scalp, and legs being the most reactive areas. According to statistics, more than 50% of Europeans are prone to reactive skin.

Urban environment as a triggering factor

But what causes this discomfort? Where does it come from, aside from the initial triggers like dermatitis and allergies? Unfortunately, there are many other factors that can contribute to it. In this context, it’s interesting to refer to the 2023 article: “Review of Factors Influencing Sensitive Skin: Focus on Urban Environments”:

Since most of us live in cities, it’s essential to consider the factors that provoke excessive skin reactivity in urban environments. Today, around 37% of the population experiences sensitivity issues, and this number continues to grow due to high stress levels and worsening environmental conditions. The study highlights urban living as one of the key triggers for increased sensitivity.

The study found a direct link between elevated stress levels and heightened skin discomfort. The stress often leads to sleep disturbances, which in turn contribute to transepidermal water loss, compromising the skin’s barrier integrity. And with that, irritation is quick to make its appearance.

The study examines other important factors, namely:

• Hormone levels—especially fluctuations in estrogen.

• Spices - especially capsaicin from chili peppers which activates the TRPV1 receptor, which in turn “stimulates the release of neuropeptides and excitatory amino acids from free nerve endings, ultimately leading to the sensation of pain in the cerebral cortex“.

• Cosmetic products – frequent and simultaneous use of multiple products can thin the stratum corneum, especially when combined with aggressive or inadequate cleansing. It can be difficult to identify which product is causing sensitivity, so the best approach is to test products one at a time.

• Smoking - “can disrupt the homeostasis of the epidermal permeability barrier” or impair its function.

• Alcohol consumption - the “decomposition of ethanol into acetaldehyde induces vasodilation, leading to facial burning and flushing“, which can increase sensitivity.

• Physical exercise - it’s not as straightforward as it seems. While physical activity can cause temporary redness due to increased blood flow, it rarely results in long-term discomfort. In fact, regular exercise helps lower stress levels, which has a positive impact on overall skin health and can actually reduce sensitivity and reactivity.

• Environment features - sun rays thin the skin, the integrity of the epidermal barrier becomes damaged, the level of moisture decreases and the skin becomes more susceptible; temperature and humidity - temperatures exceeding 43°C activate the already known to us TRPV1 receptor, which "leads to a sensation of heat and pain." Changes in temperature and humidity are provoking factors, but it is low humidity that is more likely to cause discomfort; air pollution - micro-sized dust particles can disrupt the skin barrier to varying degrees and can exacerbate existing inflammation.

Let’s take a closer look at the table. It outlines the key factors influencing reactivity, which we touched on earlier:

Researchers conclude that increased reactivity is influenced by various internal and external factors. The urban environment plays a significant role in triggering reactivity—factors like pollution, stress, and lifestyle can disrupt the epidermal barrier, either individually or in combination. When a genetic predisposition is present, the likelihood of adverse reactions rises. For instance, genetic variations in the 2p21 region have been identified in the Han population, further increasing susceptibility to these reactions.

Conclusion

While researching, I was amazed by the sheer number of factors that can affect scalp and trigger hair loss. Many studies on this topic, consistently point to the same recurring cycle—what we might call the "Wheel of Samsara": sensitivity, hair loss, and stress. It doesn’t really matter which factor sets the wheel in motion; what’s clear is that it’s they all are connected. ButI think there’s always a way to break the cycle and find solutions.

I am a fan of this line and use all three products every 2 to 3 weeks and have the softest hair without breakage.

Hair care hacks

When you are ill it is hard to think about anything but rest. But, afterward the hair can become a crazy mess and it is really hard to get it back into original shape. I would like to share a few tips and tricks based on the hair care and washing routine.

1. If you're feeling completely drained, it's best to avoid touching your hair altogether. The weaker you feel, the less you’ll want to do, and you might find yourself in a situation where you’re mid-wash, applying a pre-shampoo and mask, only to realize you don’t have the energy to finish. For me, the best approach during those tough first days is to simply put my hair in a bun and leave it alone. That way, I can focus on getting through the day without worrying about my hair.

2. A bun is a much better choice than a braid. Unlike a braid, which can rub against the pillow and lose its shape quickly, a bun stays securely in place at the top of your head. It keeps the hair stable, prevents tangling, and protects the ends effectively. It’s the perfect low-maintenance option for keeping your hair tidy without much effort.

3. Brushing your hair at least once a day is essential. I recommend doing it in the morning and, if possible, before bed at night (or whenever you're trying to wind down). This simple routine helps keep tangles at bay while providing a gentle scalp massage to stimulate blood flow. My go-to brush is the Tangle Teezer—it's effective, easy to use, and gentle on the hair.

4. It's best to keep your hair care routine as simple as possible. Skip complex multi-step regimens and focus on the basics. A good shampoo and mask, plus a little hair oil for the ends, are all you need for now. Save more intensive treatments and nourishing care for when you’re feeling stronger and have the energy to invest in a full routine.

5. If you're still dealing with a high fever and lack of strength after several days, it's crucial to prioritize your health and energy levels above all else. The hair must have become oily or messy by this time, but a quick fix can help tide you over until you’re ready for a proper wash. Mix some fresh lemon juice with warm water and apply it to your scalp. The lemon’s natural acidity helps dissolve excess oils while soothing itchiness, offering a light, refreshing cleanse.

   Alternatively, dry shampoo is an easy solution for 1–2 days. It absorbs oil and refreshes your hair, giving you a little more time before you need to shampoo properly. These simple tricks can help you feel more comfortable until you’re ready to hop in the shower and clean your hair thoroughly.

6. A cotton pillowcase now is a better choice than a silk one. While silk pillowcases are known for their smooth surface, which is great for reducing frizz and preventing hair breakage, they can also spread oils from your hair across the pillow. This can make it harder for your hair to maintain its freshness between washes.

   A cotton pillowcase, on the other hand, has a more absorbent surface that will soak up excess oils, keeping your hair more balanced. At the same time, the ends are protected by the bun.

7. Hair loss after an illness can be a major concern and a frustrating experience. It’s often unpredictable, and no one knows if or when it will happen. That’s why I believe prevention is key to maintaining healthy hair. To help minimize the risk of hair loss, I recommend starting to apply a strengthening serum as soon as you start feeling better and resume your hair care routine. This will help nourish and protect the hair, promoting recovery and strengthening it for the future.

Deep cleansing ritual after feeling better

So, you've reached the point where you're feeling better and have the energy to give your hair and scalp a deep cleanse to remove any build-up. But where to start?

I recommend a quality scalp scrub or peeling product to effectively remove buildup from your hair and scalp. Follow this with two rounds of regular shampoo to ensure a thorough cleanse. Next, apply a deep treatment: use a nourishing mask on the lengths and ends and a hydrating mask on the scalp. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes to maximize the benefits:

Hair loss

When I had COVID, these tips helped me avoid cutting my hair afterward. Unfortunately, I did lose some hair due to post-illness shedding, but using anti-hair fall serum helped me recover more quickly. My go-to is the Kérastase: Genesis Ampoules, which contain Aminexil and peptides. These not only reduce hair fall but also help soothe scalp sensitivity.

My favorites for reducing sensitivity even more are Kérastase: Rehydrant mask (if you have a dryer scalp that tends to irritate or needs moisture) and the 2% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum. These products keep the microbiome in check and work together in synergy to prevent and stop hair loss.

I apply the ampoules three times a week along with mask and serum after washing my hair. During challenging times like illness, antibiotic treatments, or stress, this routine helps me minimize or even prevent hair loss. For best results, a minimum three-month course of Aminexil is recommended, but in more serious cases, it can be extended to six or even twelve months.

The ingredients

Hyaluronic acid + Vitamin E + Abissine are the key ingredients that are the core ingredients of the line, work together to deliver hydration, protection, and a smooth hair surface:

• Hyaluronic acid - can hold up to 1000 times more water molecules than its weight. Fills the hair with moisture, and penetrates deeply. Takes care of the scalp and length. Visually increases hair thickness by attracting water molecules.

If you want to elevate your routine, there’s a sixth and most exclusive product in the line: the Chronologiste Serum. Infused with caviar, scalp soothing and revitalizing ingredients it is packed into caviar beads and a moisturizing transparent base. A unique black textured gel with charcoal and hyaluronic acid deeply but delicately cleanses the scalp and lengths. It does not leather much but leaves roots feeling squicky-clean. According to research, it removes up to 96% more pollution particles than shampoo.

This sulfate-based formula includes softening ingredients like betaine, glycerin, argan shell powder, bisabolol, ceramides, and safflower glycoside. It also contains hydrolyzed pearl—a rare and powerful antioxidant packed with 15 amino acids and essential microelements like magnesium, calcium, vitamins, and other minerals. This ingredient helps slow scalp aging, removes toxins, protects against UV damage, and offers a brightening effect. Bain Régénérant: Shampoo

The second step in the cleansing ritual, whether in the salon or at home, is the shampoo. If you've already used the pre-shampoo, one application of shampoo is enough. If you're using the shampoo alone, you can apply it twice for a more thorough cleanse. This is a gel-textured deep-cleansing shampoo that keeps hair moisturized for up to 48 hours. I have the travel-sized version (which, by the way, has never let me down on vacation).

This formula combines a sulfate-based cleanser with the line’s signature ingredients, a touch of amodimethicone, ceramides, and calming agents. It cleanses effectively without stripping hair or fading color, while its rich lather makes it economical to use. Anti-inflammatory ingredients help keep the scalp balanced, and it relaxes the curls slightly. My sensitive scalp appreciates this shampoo a lot.

This is my go-to shampoo whenever I want to look my best or when I'm unsure what my hair needs. Its texture and cleansing properties make it versatile across different hair types—from a monthly treatment for low-porosity or natural hair to a few times a week for porous, colored, or damaged hair. It strikes a unique balance between effective cleansing and moisture retention.

Masque Intense Régénérant: Mask for hair and scalp

This mask is part of the salon and home care line and offers a truly transformative experience, customizable to suit your hair and scalp needs. The brand calls it a “cream” (in the salon treatment, it's blended with caviar beads). It promises to deliver moisture, softness, frizz control for up to 48 hours, shine, and resilience.

You can apply it not only to the lengths but also directly to the scalp, where it revitalizes, hydrates, and soothes.

The mask can be used on its own—simply apply it to both scalp and lengths for 10 minutes. It’s lightweight and free from heavy ingredients, so it won’t leave the scalp feeling oily afterward. The brand states:

"The Kerastase Chronologiste Masque Intense Regenerant Hair Mask is completely safe for all skin types as it doesn’t have any type of harmful chemicals like lead, mercury, petroleum derivatives, and more. So, even if you have sensitive skin, you won’t have to worry about suffering from allergies, rashes, or burns. Unlike other masks that you can find in the market, it is completely lightweight and will add a lot of nutrients to your scalp and hair."

To enrich the mask for the lengths, you can add a few drops of Elixir Ultime Oil and blend them together, or try layering the Chronologist mask over your favorite lipid-rich mask, like the one from the Nutritive line.

To boost its effectiveness even more, leave it on for 15–20 minutes and cover your hair with a shower cap or a warm towel. The shine and manageability this ritual gives are incredible. I love this product for its versatility, soothing effect on the scalp, thickness and shine it gives to the hair, and the fact that a little goes a long way. Truly, the rare black diamond.

Thermique Régénérant: Youth Revitalizing blow-dry care

The sleek Thermique blow-dry cream offers heat protection up to 230°C, delivers 24-hour frizz control, speeds up blow-dry time, and adds moisture to the lengths.

The formula includes polymers and silicones to help lock in your hairstyle, along with the line's signature ingredients and softening agents to keep hair looking and feeling healthy. Its lightweight texture makes it easy to apply, keeping hair frizz-free for days. It also boosts shine, keeps the ends well-moisturized and doesn’t weigh the hair down.

Huile de Parfume: Fragrance in oil

The brand's thinnest oil, with its unique scent of fresh jasmine, boosts shine and keeps split ends at bay. The renewed formula contains twice as much fragrance, but it is not overpowering so it blends nicely into any perfume you wear. It is a unique blend of Corn oil, Argan oil, Camellia oil, Jasmine oil, Emblica extract, and Myrrha resin extract.

If you want to use this oil as a stand-alone fragrance, it’s best applied to dry hair—it won’t make it oily thanks to its gel-like texture. When applied to wet hair, the scent is more refined and subtle. The oil is nearly colorless and is safe for color-treated hair. I have the travel-sized 50 ml plastic version. But the 100 ml bottle comes in pretty black glass packaging.

If you have very dry skin, you can massage a drop or two into the scalp. You can also use this oil as a pre-shampoo treatment—just apply it to the ends for 20 minutes before washing or leave it on overnight for deeper nourishment. Plus, it provides bonus heat protection.

Final thoughts

The Chronologiste line from Kérastase is one of my favorites. It’s not only a luxurious range, but it truly revitalizes my hair, leaving it feeling rejuvenated and youthful. My scalp feels calm and nourished, while the lengths are deeply moisturized, shiny, and full. The indulgent fragrance makes the whole experience truly unique. Each product is like a piece of a puzzle, working in synergy. However, if you’re only looking to buy one product, rest assured—they all blend well with other brands and textures.

Sisley is an independent French luxury cosmetic, skincare, hair care, and perfume company. The main focus is on the ingredients that are derived from plants. Rare extracts are exquisitely formulated to deliver all their benefits to the skin and hair shaft. Hair Rituals is a newer line of hair care in the brand, but already has many amazing products. Today we will talk about seven of them.

A few words about Hair Rituel

The line is focused not only on the length of the hair, but also resolves scalp problems: “Sisley Research applied its skincare expertise to develop a high-performance hair care brand. To give your hair the same attention as the skin, Hair Rituel by Sisley provides an ultra-effective hair care range for women and men, using a powerful concentration of plant-based extracts, essential oils and vitamins.“

The line has multiple shampoos for different problems and some nice day-to-day versions, scalp serums, leave-in products, and hair brushes. The brand comes up with new products from time to time and all of them are fantastic:

The brand views hair care as a special ritual you can indulge in at home. Relaxing scents, a cashmere-like texture, luxurious packaging, and exceptional performance help you escape everyday life and savor the moment.

Let’s look at my hair with all of the products:

My ends aren't perfect, but the shine and silkiness I get from these products are incredible. For context, here's a bit about my hair:

• Can be quite dry

• Sometimes falls out.

So now let’s talk more about the products.

Revitalizing Volumizing Shampoo 1

The bestseller of the brand has a good core of ingredients in it: Vitamin B5, B6, E, Magneesium, Zinc, Arginine, Alpha-Bisabolol, Ceramides, Cotton Proteins, Shea Butter, Camelia Oil, Hazelnut Oil.

The ingredients are powerful, and even though it's sulfate-free, it cleans really well. I use a tiny drop and get a good lather. The scent is natural and not overpowering. The shampoo comes in a shiny tube:

It's quite runny but easy to dispense:

This shampoo is amazing — it cleanses well, adds a lot of shine and volume, and nourishes your hair. One thing to consider is that it's very concentrated and rich. If your hair isn't damaged, colored, or has low porosity, this might be best used as a treatment shampoo. Using it every day on healthy hair might be too much. However, if your hair is colored, bleached, overprocessed, dry, or porous, this is your go-to magic wand for transforming it into voluminous, shiny locks.

I like to use this shampoo for special occasions because it always gives outstanding results. If I had to compare it to other brands, I'd say it's like a hybrid of my favorite Kérastase shampoos—Thérapiste and Elixir Ultime (combining proteins, amino acids, and oils). It works well with all my hair masks (hydrating, nourishing, and protein ones), but the best results come from using it with the Sisley Regenerating Hair Mask.

Regenerating Hair Care Mask

The multifunctional Sisley Regenerating Hair Care Mask is designed for use on both the scalp and ends, making it unique and convenient for travel. The mask comes in a sleek, shiny black tube, just like the shampoo.

The key ingredients of the mask are similar to those in the shampoo: Vitamin B5, B6, E, Magnesium, Zinc, Arginine, Alpha-Bisabolol, Ceramides, Cotton Proteins, Shea Butter, Camellia Oil, and Hazelnut Oil. But the mask goes even further, including Rice Proteins and Macadamia Oil.

It doesn't contain heavy silicones, just a small amount of amodimethicone at the end of the list. The best thing about it is its multifunctionality and the quick 5-10 minute leave-in time. In that short period, your hair transforms into silky, smooth, and voluminous locks while your scalp is healed and moisturized.

The consistency is creamy, not oily or heavy:

The scent of the mask is the same compared to the other Sisley products - natural and silent. I put it on for 10-15 minutes and always get good results. It has a soothing sensation on the scalp and plumps up the ends. It works great with any shampoo (Sisley or other brands): you always get shiny, manageable, silky hair. If you have natural low-porosity hair this is more of a treatment product. But if you color the hair or it is porous then this does its magic every time.

The Cream 230

This is one of the best leave-in products, that is going to last you a while. The creamy souffle texture comes in a sleek black bottle. There is 150ml of the product inside:

So, why 230? This leave-in cream has special technology that is activated by heat and protects your hair up to 230 degrees. The texture transforms into a micro-gel that fills in the empty holes of the hair shaft (hair surface becomes smooth). Furthermore, it has Camellia and Moringa oils, Cotton Proteins and Sugar Cane Extract.

You can use it with or without heat. It works wonders both ways, but with heat the hair becomes amazing. The silkiness and shine are incredible. It is very easy to use and the pump works great. The consistency is nice and soft:

It has the right balance of nutrition and moisture. You can add it on day 2 after wash and the hair will not feel greasy. This method allows one to use it as a night serum - put one pump into the hands, rub it into the hair, and leave it at night. In the morning the hair will be plump, shiny, and moisturized.

This is a universal product for all hair types and structures. Not heavy, but uniquely transforms your hair into beautiful locks.

Precious Hair Care Oil

The famous fragranced hair oil, a signature product in the line:

The Hair Care Oil has: Shea, Cotton, Moringa and Passion Fruit Oil, a few siliсones and parfume. The scent is very luxurious and leaves a trail on the hair. It is soft, natural, and not overpowering.

The oil is magical—lightweight, subtly fragranced, and adds multidimensional shine to your hair. It instantly transforms and nourishes, making it a versatile product for every hair type. The pump works perfectly, giving you just the right amount each time. You can apply it to wet or dry strands, and it's very economical to use.

The texture is more gel-like, not sticky or oily:

The scent is subtle, with notes of cotton, passion fruit, and shea butter. It stays with you for a couple of days. Could be used with any other product from the Sisley line or a different brand.

This is my must-have due to its versatility, light texture, and nourishing properties.

Pre-Shampoo Purifying Mask

This unique pre-shampoo mask with White Clay is designed to purify the scalp. Sisley was one of the first brands to emphasize scalp care, recognizing that healthy hair starts at the root. Applied to "dirty" hair before shampooing, the mask absorbs excess oils, pollution, and impurities from both the scalp and hair.

Formulated with white clay, glycerin, panthenol, soothing botanical extracts, litsea cubeba oil, and cotton proteins, its gentle texture makes it suitable for sensitive scalps. The sleek packaging includes a precise nozzle for easy application, and the mask has a light, pleasant scent.

I use this mask on wash days before shampooing, leaving it on for 10-15 minutes. Sometimes I apply it only to the scalp, and other times, I use a small amount on my length (always wetting the ends beforehand). Not only does it help control oiliness and remove impurities, but it also works wonders to moisturize my hair. For me, it’s an absolute must-have.

Two years ago I went to Turkey. The holiday was so pleasant and relaxing though my hair did not feel the same on day 3. While I was relaxing my hair slowly turned into a nightmare: brittle, tangly, sticky mess.

Afterward, I figured out what was going on. The humid climate and soft milky water in the hotel made my hair feel horrible. I didn’t know at the time, that these two factors can play a major role in hair care.

High humidity means a lot of moisture in the air (especially, near open water or in rainy climates). The more porous the hair the more it reacts to humidity due to more loose cuticles. This process can affect the protein structure. The cuticle gets swollen over time and hair begins to lack protein. The protein-moisture balance is important to keep the hair structure in shape. Moisturizing products make the hair softer, and protein products - stronger.

After that vacation, it took me a while to understand how to get my hair back on track. So today I want to share with you my strategy on how to help keep the hair in shape in a humid climate or on a trip.

The rules

There are a few rules to remember if you live or visit a region with high humidity. The slight difference comes due to water hardness.

The first combination is humid climate and soft milky water. The softness of the water and a soft shampoo (sulfate-free, for example) can not cleanse the hair well, humidity is loading hair with moisture and a nourishing mask puts the cherry on top. The hair becomes overloaded with moisturizing ingredients. Due to soft water a mild shampoo makes the hair even more soft and doesn’t cleanse it as well. It becomes sticky, tangly, and dry at the same time.

The solution is to choose a good sulfate shampoo, use it daily, and opt for a more deep cleansing once a week. If your hair is already in that sticky-tangly state, then a good cleanse with deep cleansing shampoo 2 times in a row should improve the situation.

The second important step is to apply a protein mask (hydrolyzed proteins, keratin, amino acids, and ceramides work). Use it consistently for 2-3 washes and then opt for a conditioner (not a moisturizing one). You should feel the difference from the first wash.

Use a lighter leave-in conditioner or leave-in cream. I would not suggest using hair oil in such a climate.

In mild soft water, you will benefit from a deeper cleansing shampoo and a protein mask. 

The second combination is humid climate and hard water. This changes the routine to a milder/everyday shampoo (sulfate-free ones included). Since the water is harder, you should not use a deeper cleansing shampoo often (every other week should be enough).

The protein mask should be used once a week and daily opt for a mask with silicons or film-formers. It will protect the hair from outside humidity. You can also use a conditioner from time to time (again, not a moisturizing one).

I would suggest using a leave-in cream, specially formulated for the humid climates (like the red one from Kerastase).

In hard water, you will benefit from a combination of deeper cleansing shampoo and mild one, plus a film-forming mask. 

The Products

Let’s talk more about the products. I have been a loyal fan of the brand Kérastase and L'Oréal Professionnel for years. These are French hair care brands owned by L'Oréal Paris. This means you get patented ingredients, balanced formulas, and great packaging. The deeper cleansing shampoos first:

The black one is from Kérastase: Pré-Cleanse Régénérant. This is a pre-shampoo that is used before your daily shampoo to cleanse the hair from pollution and buildup. The cleansing base includes sulfates, charcoal, and salicylic acid. Other ingredients are hyaluronic acid, abyssine, vitamin E, bisabolol, and ceramides. The hair is not stripped, yet well cleansed. Do not be off-put by the black color, it doesn’t stain the hair or the bathroom.

L'Oréal Metal Detox shampoo is a good alternative to a deep cleansing shampoo. It is sulfate-free, has good cleansing power, and removes metal + chlorine buildup from the hair. It does not provoke frizziness, the hair is soft and supply. Works wonders in hard water and on colored hair (especially, blonde).

My more day-to-day version of sulfate shampoo(or the 2nd shampoo after deeper cleansing one) is the Genesis: Bain Hydra-Fortifiant. It cleanses quite well, you can feel the hair is squicky-clean, but not stripped. It also prevents hair fall and has nice antioxidants like Edelweiss Native Cells and Ginger Root.

The sulfate-free shampoo I prefer is Chroma Absolu: Bain Riche Chroma Respect. This is mild and has good ingredients like lactic acid and Centella asiatica. Although Chroma Absolu has a specific strong fragrance, it does not irritate my nose or my sensitive scalp. In hard water, this shampoo makes my hair soft and prevents it from getting frizzy in humid weather. This is a unique characteristic of this product.

Two masks that I prefer are also from Kérastase.

The first one, which is loaded with proteins and amino-acids is Résistance: Thérapiste. The product helps to reduce breakage and “fill in” the cuticle, supports the hair structure like a “bandage“. Unique ingredients like Fibra-Kap molecules (6 amino-acids, wheat protein hydrolat, SP 94 - safflower glycoside), ceramides, Tamarindus Indica Seed Polysaccharide, and Myrothamnus Leaf Extract strengthen the fiber from root to tip.

This is my mask number one in humidity and both harsh and soft water. It restores the moisture-protein balance, coats the hair, and balances everything out.

The second mask is Après-Soleil from the Sun-line. It is specifically formulated for vacations near the sea or in the mountains. The main ingredients are coconut water, silicones, glycerin, and ceramides. This combination provides a good moisturizing effect in hard water, wraps the hair in a seamless film, and protects it from humidity. Ceramides help to repair hair strands and UV-filter shields the hair. Comes in a gel form, works fast, and does not weigh the hair down.

The leave-ins I prefer are the spray from Mediceuticals or the Kérastase Crème UV Sublime. Mediceuticals spray has a light milky consistency, UV filter, hydrolyzed keratine, hydrolyzed protein, glycerine, and panthenol. It is both a heat protector, UV protector, and detangler. Kérastase Creme is a unique CC-cream type of product that moisturizes the hair, has UV protection, and instantly transforms the strands into healthy locks.

So, these are my tips ant tricks and the products that help me survive the vacation no mater what type of water I stumble in.

Naturally, my hair color is dark brown, but with time it became less vibrant and glossy plus I have a few rebellious grey hairs that I want to conceal. That is why the Color Gel in Dark Chestnut has become my favorite product for the last 3 years.

Plus, it helps me to preserve my natural hair color and washes away completely in 8 washes.

Let’s meet with Christophe Robin, the brand’s creator.

Christophe worked with Elle and Vogue on many publications and collaborated on advertising campaigns with Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, and Yves Saint Laurent.

He worked with Kate Moss, Claudia Schiffer, Kylie Minogue, Catherine Deneuve, Ines de la Fressange, Uma Thurman and Milla Jovovich on many projects.

In 1999, Christophe launched his first hair care products where most ingredients were natural. He paid special attention to extracts. You can find wheat germ oil, lavender, lemon, chamomile, bellflower, blueberry, and prickly pear extract in the product formulations.

Starting in April 2004 Christophe Robin worked as an exclusive colorist creator with the famous L’Oréal Paris.

In 2010, he launched his own hair color products that had no ammonia and were enriched in Buriti Oil and Almond Butter.

Today the brand remains true to itself: it strives to maintain natural ingredients in its formulations and has many fans among celebrities (Kylie Minogue, Catherine Deneuve, Ines de la Fressange).

The product

My favorite product from Christophe Robin is the Temporary Color Gel. I have been using it religiously for a few years. It comes in 4 different colors (for blondes and brunettes):

It helps to conceal the first gray hairs and maintain the color of the hair on the cooler side.

The Color Gel comes in a sleek black tube that is very easy and convenient to use. The toothbrush, gloves and instructions are included in the box:

You must be careful while using the product: in concentrated form, it stains the sink/bathtub if not removed right away. I always put on gloves and cover the sink with protective film. On the other hand, it does not stain the bathroom, when I wash it away.

The color Dark Chestnut is on the cooler side with a hint of puprle:

The coloring process

The coloring process is quite easy and takes about an hour.

All you have to do is wash your hair with a silicone-free shampoo, pat it with a towel, take the Color Gel, shake the bottle, and start applying it to your hair.

There are a few ways you can apply the Gel:

1. Color certain areas - take the toothbrush, put some Color Gel on it, and glide through the chosen hair spots. For example, I have a few spots that require more attention than the others. Plus the baby hair near the face is easier to color with the smaller tool.

2. Color your outgrowth - the toothbrush comes in handy again - put the Color Gel on it and start gliding through the hair sections until all the outgrowth is covered.

3. Color all hair lengths - you can color the hair from roots to ends if you want a more intense result. First, color the roots and then put some color gel on your gloves and massage it through the lengths (you can mix it with your favorite mask for a more hydrating option).

After doing the chosen coloring method, you have to wait 40 minutes for the color to soak in. Then it’s time to wash the Gel off. Put on the gloves again, add a bit of water to the hair, and emulsify the product (massage the hair with water) for 3 minutes. And now rinse the Color Gel off with water, until the water becomes clear.

You don’t have to use a conditioner, but you can if you want to.

Now you are done and can proceed to blow drying. Make sure to put some heat protectant on your ends.

How long does it last

It washes out completely from the hair after 6-8 washes (depending on your shampoo). The grays start to shine through quicker - after the 3-4 washes.

The sulfate and deeper cleansing shampoos wash the color away quicker.

The sulfate-free versions are more gentle and the color can cling to the hair for up to 8 washes. It fades away beautifully.

The product is easy to use and can be a good option if you have first gray hair, want to cover the outgrowth before the salon visit, or make your hair color more vibrant.

My hair feels soft and manageable after using this product, it does not irritate my sensitive scalp, and it is gentle on the lengths of my hair. This is my hair color after using the product:

The hair color is vibrant, cool, and natural. The gray hair is concealed and the quality of the hair remains good.

Have you noticed your scalp feeling itchy, dry, or flaky? Maybe you have dandruff but at the same time, the scalp is dry. You cannot figure out what to use because products for oily hair increase your sensitivity but products for dry skin make it oily.

Believe me, I have been there. Only a few years ago, I realized I have a sensitive scalp. 

Background

I always had normal or combination skin on my face. I knew it was sensitive. But it never occurred to me that my scalp is quite the same. I have combination skin on my scalp and it is sensitive. 

Later I read in multiple sources that the skin on your face is almost a 99 percent match to the skin on your scalp.

What can cause a sensitive scalp: my experience

That's when I started to analyze my hair care routine and understood what are the problem causes:

• The blow dryer: on maximum heat settings causes a burning feeling on my scalp

• The scalp scrub: using it often can cause irritation

• The hair color: not every hair color is good for my scalp - sometimes I may experience more dryness or itchiness

• Too mild cleansing: the use of sulfate-free cleansing conditioners is not enough: the scalp gets itchy from buildup and is not properly cleansed

• The visit to the doctor: the dermatologist and trichologist proved that it is not a medical issue but my reactive skin

• Medication and central heating: I can get the feeling of a dry scalp from medication or from central heat/the beanies (especially, during winter)

Solutions

So, it is quite hard for me to find the right balance.

But with time I developed some basic rules that helped my sensitive scalp stay in place:

1. Washing the hair twice a week (that way I do not over or under-wash my scalp)

2. Switching the shampoo from time to time according to the needs of the hair and scalp (from deeper cleansing to mild sulfate-free versions)

3. Shampoo vs scalp treatment. If I use a deep cleansing shampoo I always follow it with a nourishing scalp mask. So the next time I use a mild sulfate-free shampoo and put a scalp conditioner only for 1 minute

4. Let the hair air dry from time to time or blow dry it on a minimum heat setting

5. The scalp peeling with AHA is better that the scalp scrub

6. Use a hairbrush with soft bristles: it does not scratch nor irritate the scalp

7. Using scalp toners with salicylic acid in summer after washing the hair: this component is quite exfoliating you only need it in the hot humid climate or if you have an oily scalp

8. Make notes about the performance of the products and hair routine in the Hey, hair app: you can track what worked best for your scalp and what to avoid

Scalp vs lengths

It is very tricky to find products that are suitable both for your scalp and lengths. If you are growing out the hair this should not be a compromise. 

I want to share with you some of the techniques that help keep the scalp clean and the lengths moisturized:

1. Find two shampoos that suit your scalp: one should have a stronger cleansing base (sulfate shampoo) and the other mild (sulfate-free shampoo/cleansing conditioner)

2. When you are shampooing with the more cleansing shampoo always use a pre-poo method: apply any conditioner or a mild hair mask to the lengths of your hair and keep it on for 2 to 15 minutes

3. When using a peeling on your hair make sure also to use a pre-poo method: the tiny scrub particles can scratch the hair lengths and damage them, but the conditioner or a mask will form a protective layer on top of your hair

4. Never use peeling after the coloring service or prior to the deep cleansing shampoo: too much exfoliation is bad for your sensitive scalp (make at least a week's break)

5. The use of a calming hair gel prior to washing can help you reduce the irritation (I tried to use oil on the scalp but it does not wash out completely)

6. Use multi-masking to benefit both the scalp and the lengths: apply a silicon-free scalp mask on the roots and follow with a nourishing mask on the ends

The products

Let’s talk about the products. There are a few that I have been loving for a long time.

The shampoos

• Kerastase Specifique Bain Riche Dermo-Calm Shampoo

  

• Vichy Dercos Ultra Soothing shampoo: dry hair

  

• Loreal Sensi Balance Shampoo (probably will be replaced by the newer version Scalp Advanced Anti-discomfort version)

All three of them are mild on the scalp and have good cleansing and calming abilities. I would suggest using them after coloring services and in combination with more cleansing ones (if needed).

Scalp masks and conditioner

• Orising Coconut Mask (more natural option, silicone free)

• Rated Green Cold Press Avocado Nourishing Scalp Pack

• Mediceuticals Vitatin Conditioner

• Kerastase Specifique Mask Hydra Apaisant

  

All of these have good soothing abilities. The masks give you more moisture and conditioner is a good-to-go everyday option.

Scalp peeling

• Dsd de Luxe 1.3 peeling

  

• Sim Sensitive System 4 Oil Cure Scalp Treatment O

  

Both options are mild yet effective on the scalp. You should leave them on for 10-15 minutes and then wash them off with your ordinary shampoo.

Scalp creams and serums

• Dsd de Luxe 4.5 Keratin Treatment Serum

• Sim Sensitive Moisture Scalp Lotion M

• Sim Sensitive 4 Bio Botanical Serum

The Dsd de Luxe 4.5 is applied after washing and is a leave-in soothing product. Sim Sensitive could be applied as a pre-wash scalp-protecting product and as a leave-in scalp lotion.

The Bio Botanical Serum is a watery serum with anti-fungal and scalp-stimulating ingredients and helps with hair loss or dandruff.

The new Kerastase Symbiose and Loreal Professional Scalp Advanced line.

The new Loreal Scalp Advanced contains different products that are formulated for deregulated scalps. It is approved by dermatologists.

The main ingredients are Niacinamide, AHA, Clay, and Piroctone Olamine.

You choose between anti-discomfort, anti-oiliness, and anti-dandruff products. For me, they all speak to the sensitive scalp and solve different problems.

The new Kerastase Symbiose range offers a wide range of products for the sensitive scalp with a tendency to dandruff or oily skin type. It regulates cellular renewal speed and deeply hydrates to replenish fiber. After 7 weeks of use, you should see good results.

Conclusion

Treating your sensitive scalp with the right products and techniques is important. With time you will learn what products work for you and develop a hair routine.
